My Husband's Lover : a Depressing yet Beautiful Gay Love Story on TV

My Husband's Lover is a depressing teleserye. It has a story that spirals down from a relationship built on lies because of a perceived stability-- than to be none the wiser-- to a truth that brings more misery than relief. It is a story told from a wife's perspective, narrated in consequential manner with flashbacks that can correlate with the present situations.

The title can be directly pointed to Erick, the husband's lover in which the wife, Lally, narrated the story in varying emotions from happiness to suffering and guilt. Reconciliation seems to be arduous in a situation tied down because of a marital vow yet redemption can be attained but seemingly difficult to conceive.

It's depressing, really but somehow the beauty in My Husband's Lover is its nearness to real situations though the narration and plots are fictionalized. It's a commendable teleserye, groundbreaking as they say.

I am not a fan of GMA teleseryes but this one is an exemption. However, I have but no comments on this TV show aired late on weeknights even though critics and fans say this is phenomenal.

One, the lack of kissing part of the gay couples makes the teleserye less real. I know, I know it's fiction but it seems that the kissing part is only on the part of Lally and Vincent, the gay husband. If this is a gay-themed teleserye, then  it should at least show some gay passion with a kiss. Not the torrid one, save it for gay indie films but at least believable kiss that tells that this gay couple loves each other and not just playing around with the wife of one of the couple.

If My Husband's Lover is a gay-themed teleserye then it must show a gay couple kissing. Even a smack is void on the actors playing the gay roles. Yes, the producers and writers want to target the heterosexual viewers to make them more aware of a certain part of the society in this kind of situation. But if it doesn't show even a smack from gay couple then it should not also bring into TV the act of lovemaking between a woman and a man who is gay.

Two, I am more prone to learn the story of David and his beau than just Eric and Vincent's. Eric and Vincent's story is depressing because of a marital situation. At least, the show must show some fun side of the gay story-telling  from the supporting casts with gay roles. Even Danny, whose homophobic mother has tolerated only his gayness but has more intention to bring more suffering to her son by depriving him of "neutral" romantic relationship, brings light to the show on an effeminate but macho-looking spectrum of gayness.

David, played by Victor Basa, should also be put into light as he is a more masculine gay with a very cute boyfriend. I would want to know how he ends up with a cute boyfriend after years of secretly hoping for Vincent, his best friend and one-time college sweetheart.

Three, I am confused of the role of Eric on the act of being effeminate. I believe he is the effeminate one in the gay relationship with Vincent and somehow it implies that even in a gay relationship, there's still the man and woman roles. Actually, there are gay relationships similar on that show's portrayal. It's like Eric is in the borderline effeminate and masculine which is kinda okay. But I like the masculine Eric because it adds to his appeal as a gay man even though the actor who portrays the role seems straight.

Despite of my comments, I still give the show a thumbs up. I think it still requires baby steps and I believe in the future, there will be shows similar to this which can break more grounds than what My Husband's Lover has been able to attain.
