Pasigarbo sa Pagkatawo in Cebu this December 2017

Cebu City will host the first Pasigarbo sa Pagkatawo this year on December 1-3. This will be a momentous event for the LGBTIQ community in Cebu and in the Visayas as this event potentially brings visibility to the community, something I have dreamed about to happen in Cebu, being a secret member of the community.

Cebu may have an active LGBTIQ community but it is not something really felt. Perhaps, it might be because the LGBTQI's are more accepted here. The blogging communities in Cebu are also composed of LGBTIQ persons, myself included. But not all are out and mostly discreet.

With the rising HIV cases reported in Cebu, there must be an event or series of events that will bring impetus to young LGBTIQ's who are searching for allies and understanding in the community.

Yes, the stigma of being gay, lesbian, transgender is still there but here, I am hoping that this will be greatly reduced and that acceptance is more clearly seen with the presence of those who can provide assistance, support and better environment for youngsters who have been confused and who are still searching and exploring their sexuality.

Themed “Pasigarbo sa Pagkatawo (Behold our Identity)”, the event eyes to “host – for the first time – a Visayas-led national celebration of LGBT Pride via the festival; just as it will provide a venue for us to look closely where we are in facing the continuing challenges in the LGBT movement so we know what else needs to be done to hasten our social inclusion,” said Roxanne Omega Doron, head of Bisdak Pride Inc., which is co-organizing the event with Outrage Magazine, the only LGBT publication in the Philippines.

EVENTS LINED UP

Kicking off the event will be 4th LGBT National Conference from December 1-3, which will gather LGBT community leaders and members to identify key issues that continue to affect the local LGBT community, particularly vis-à-vis the past three national conferences. This will be the first time that the national conference will be held outside of Luzon; and the first time that an organization not from Metro Manila will be helming it.

According to Michael David dela Cruz Tan, publishing editor of Outrage Magazine, of particular interest in this year’s gathering is the “bringing of a ‘national’ discussion out of Metro Manila to ensure not only better representation, but bigger participation of those who would otherwise continue to be ignored”.

If you wish to be updated about the event, head to its Facebook page and also check out more updates at Outrage Magazine.
